Stars can live for millions, billions, or trillions of years. Milky Way is between 100000 and 120000 lightyears in diameter, the stars we see at night are usually only a few thousand light years away. It didn’t take millions of years for the light to reach us.
Now photos of distant galaxies taken by Hubble, those look back over 20 million years. And microwave radio telescopes pick up things 13.8 billion years back.
But when you wish upon a star, it is probably just a few thousand years older than it looks.
